Combined heat and power (CHP), also known as cogeneration, is an efficient, clean, and reliable technology, which simultaneously generates power and thermal energy from a single fuel source. By installing a combined heat and power (CHP) system designed to meet the thermal and electrical base loads of a facility, cogeneration can greatly increase the facility’s operational efficiency and decrease energy costs. At the same time, CHP, or cogeneration, reduces the emission of greenhouse gases, which contribute to global climate change.
On-Site Generation and High Efficiency
Combined heat and power (CHP) systems are located on-site at the energy consumer, thereby eliminating distribution losses that a central power plant experiences. Cogeneration is 85% efficient due to the capture of useable heat from the generator engine for use in domestic hot water heating, space heating, absorption cooling, dehumidification, pool water heating, and process heat. In stark contrast, traditional central power plants are approximately 35% efficient, because heat is released to the atmosphere or nearby bodies of water.
